For our first installment, the buttons. Buttons say a lot. Our theory is that brands rarely talk about buttons because they rarely put much thought into them. Not us. We pontificated over buttons for many days: plastic, wood, mother of pearl, synthetic plastic and mother of pearl… In the end, the four of us unanimously agreed that Corozo buttons were the only choice.
Corozo buttons are made from Tagua nuts that grow on trees in the most humid areas of the Amazon rainforest. The Tagua nut is also referred to as vegetable ivory because once the shell is removed, the nut itself has a texture and grain nearly identical to elephant ivory.
This close resemblance is a great thing. A flourishing of the Tagua nut industry has helped create an increasingly popular alternative to the despicable and illegal trade of elephant ivory. Alongside being 100% sustainable, the process of turning the Tagua nuts into Corozo buttons is incredibly labor intensive. The Corozo button industry provides tens of thousands of jobs to people living in impoverished communities.
Here is the kicker though. Corozo buttons are more scratch resistant, temperature resistant, and impact resistant than just about any other type of button.
Not to take away from the Tagua nut, but we think our button design is also pretty great; not too ostentatious, not too plain – just right. The next time you are buttoning up one of our shirts, close your eyes and feel how nice they feel in between your fingers and how easily they pop into each button hole.
