from the u.s. mail: field notes county fair edition.

Field Notes County Fair Edition

We love notebooks. We especially love those that fit cleanly in the back pocket of your jeans without you knowing it is there. You cannot underestimate those times when you have to scratch down some copy, sketch a concept or scribble some directions to buried treasure. When the Field Notes County Fair editions came out I snagged a 3 pack of the three states that represent where the members of Taylor Stitch hail from. This way we can look at the back of them and compare who has the coolest state representation as far as things like insect, fish and animal go. I am not going to lie though, I’m a little disappointed that Wisconsin and Maine share the same state insect (European Honey Bee) and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania share the same state fossil (Trilobite).

Either way you cut it, these things remind me of days of past at my own Cumberland County Fair in Maine. It brings back crazy memories of eating fried dough with powdered sugar, throwing darts at balloons in attempt to win a ridiculously small stuffed animal, riding the Gravitron while hoping nobody next to you puked and last but not least the demolition derby. What is better than people in old cars spray painted with racing stripes and numbers ramming each other until they light on fire and don’t run anymore? You tell me…

Last but not least I want to pay homage to none other than Aaron Draplin who is one of the amazing minds behind Field Notes and the now immortalized Field Notes Tumblr theme that so many people have used. I know this video has been out for a while but for those who have not seen it, please enjoy it in it’s entirety.

how to wear it: bodega bay plaid.

We quietly snuck one of our new spread collar shirts up in a post a couple previous of this one. You also might have seen it if you joined us for some Tennessee Moonshine and Six Point Craft Ales last Monday evening at the Ace Hotel in NYC. This is all here nor there though.

We are sharing a couple pictures of bow ties paired with our Bodega Bay Plaid, which will be debuting next week on the Taylor Stitch webshop. It is not an easy shirt to match but when done correctly it is a tell tale sign you know what you are doing when it comes to getting dressed. We’ve chosen the Pierrepont Hicks Field bowtie from our good buds Kat + Mac as well as a bowtie from Forage. For those unfamiliar with Forage, they are made by a couple from Philadelphia who just put together an art installation at San Francisco’s own Curiosity Shoppe down in the Mission. We know we did not pair any regular ties with them but we can blindly recommend any solid navy blue knit tie to go along with this. You will not win any stuntman awards for being the most daring but you will still look dapper. We just enjoy the bowtie.

Tie it up and make sure it looks snappy.

corozo buttons. keeping your shirt on.

corozo buttons for dress shirtsFor our first installment, the buttons. Buttons say a lot. Our theory is that brands rarely talk about buttons because they rarely put much thought into them. Not us. We pontificated over buttons for many days: plastic, wood, mother of pearl, synthetic plastic and mother of pearl…  In the end, the four of us unanimously agreed that Corozo buttons were the only choice.

Corozo buttons are made from Tagua nuts that grow on trees in the most humid areas of the Amazon rainforest. The Tagua nut is also referred to as vegetable ivory because once the shell is removed, the nut itself has a texture and grain nearly identical to elephant ivory.

This close resemblance is a great thing. A flourishing of the Tagua nut industry has helped create an increasingly popular alternative to the despicable and illegal trade of elephant ivory. Alongside being 100% sustainable, the process of turning the Tagua nuts into Corozo buttons is incredibly labor intensive. The Corozo button industry provides tens of thousands of jobs to people living in impoverished communities.

please allow us to introduce ourselves.

A sneak peak of what is to come...

In a series of posts to follow, we will elaborate on the form, function, and fanciful thinking behind our new line of ready-to-wear shirts.

While we are most maniacal about the details, our hope is that no detail in particular sticks out. Our design goal was to create a well balanced, well crafted shirt that is modernly classic in every way. We are adamant in our belief that our shirts can be worn forever, and are constructed to do so. At no point in the future will anyone look at one of our shirts on someone and think “thats a little over the top” or “I remember when that was popular”.

The colors are unique, subtly different but not outspoken. The fabric is the perfect weight and texture for each style, and the quality is the best we could procure. The cut is trim but not anemic. Everything is in proportion, everything is exactly how it should be. View the Taylor Stitch Size Guide.

We hope you enjoy the fruit of our labor, and if there are any questions you have regarding our shirts,  please do not ever hesitate to ask. Drop a line to contact@taylorstitch.com.

something is hiding in here @ the curiosity shoppe.

Pictures from the event

This Friday evening the gents from Something Is Hiding In Here will be debuting their new installation at the Curiosity Shop in San Francisco on Valencia between 19th and 20th. And you better believe that it is bow tie related.

We are excited for a number of reasons. 1. The guys behind Something Is Hiding In Here make some killer bow ties, are very very creative, and certainly have something good up their sleeve.  2. We are very big fans of the Curiosity Shop (it is my go-to place for any gift, not to mention the store could not be any better curated). 3. The Something Is  Hiding In Here guys are from Philly, as am I, and we are looking forward to meeting them and checking out their wares in person.

Mike and I will be there to lend people a hand tying bow ties while we are not imbibing.

It is fixing to be a great gathering of the city’s most savvy sartorial socialites and we do hope that you can come on by.

Details: Opening Reception is this Friday, the 23rd between 6-9 PM at the Curiosity Shop. 855 Valencia Street

And what you have all been waiting for, the bow ties themselves….

the blog is back (and we are finally introducing our new site).

The times they are a changin'

First off, we are sorry to have been dormant for so long. There were some pressing issues that needed to be attended to as we changed the website over, which meant the blog did not get the necessary love it deserves. That being said, we are hoping we will have time for a flood of meaningful back logged content on here in the coming weeks. Updates on what we have been up to, new upcoming products, explanations of our actions. All the good stuff.

As many of you have probably noticed Taylor Stitch went through a site redesign. We pulled the custom design feature down for the time being and are working on a different more simplified version. In the meantime, to order custom shirts you are more than welcome to drop us a line via email, give us a jingle or feel free to shoot us a good old fashioned singing telegram expressing your desire to get sized up and we will make sure it happens. It is easier to interact with us directly anyways and we truly enjoy speaking to everyone.

We are also incredibly delighted to offer a new line of ready to wear shirts that will be perpetually changing in limited quantities as we find more amazing fabrics from the far corners of the world (more to debut next week). We hope you enjoy their nice trim fit as much as we do and if you have any sizing questions on these please be in touch.

In ending this initial post I want to leave you with some fun extra pictures from our photo shoot with Neil Berrett (http://neilberrett.com/). Neil is also world renowned for resigning from a former job via sheet cake. He is deserved of his own post as well that will be coming up soon.

Kyle Blue, Dwell Design Director and Aaron Britt, Dwell Senior Editor joined us for the photo shoot for our collaboratively designed shirt

pierrepont hicks drops by the taylor stitch outpost.

Pierpont Hicks and Taylor Stitch 1

Around dusk on Tuesday evening, a very dapper man driving a ’78 Toyota Landcruiser stealthily dropped off a package that was carefully wrapped in butcher paper. We were unable to get the gents name, and all we know is that he was wearing a finely cut suit with a very colorful spring bow tie.

Unsure of what was in the box, we were excited to find a stash of Pierrepont Hick’s latest summer ties and bows including the Skeet Shooter, which has yet to make itself available on the PPH online shop.

Unfortunately, the dandy-incognito only left a limited number of these fine pieces, so be sure to come by our our pop-up store @ 2209 Chestnut Street to try your luck at acquiring one.

After the clock strikes 8 PM this Sunday evening, the shop will vanish into thin air, much like the gent that dropped off these ties!

it’s those black stretchy yoga pants…

…that have us popping up again. We are talking about our store of course – get your mind out of the gutter. Yes, we have once again found an oh so temporary place to call home as well as another very fitting partner in crime,  Marine Layer. Cheesy puns and sub-par sexual innuendo aside, we have teamed up with our good friends at Marine Layer to open a cozy yet perfectly placed outpost on Chestnut Street.

We would have let you known about this earlier but we just found out a few days ago ourselves, and in fact, actually received the keys to the store this morning. The space used to be occupied by a salon, so needless to say, a better portion of the day was spent painting over an awful hue of peach and trying to count how many pairs of black stretchy pants that passed through our view. There is a contest involved for a year supply of shirts if you come in and can guess how many pairs you think we will see over the course of our 10 day stint in the shop (4 TS shirts in the Ox Blood Line and 12 Marine Layer tees and yes this is serious).

Anyway, we thought we would share some “before and after” photos with you, below are the before shots, tomorrow we will follow up with the finished product. Spread the word and we don’t officially open till Saturday but if you come by tomorrow between 6 and 8 there may or may not be a small pile of free beverages being serenaded by the sounds of none other than DJ Teen Wolf (He’s hot off Coachella by the way).
